The New Picture: HDR and Digital Cinematography

Picture This_17 welcomes speakers Jan Frölich and Rolf Coulanges in two sessions dealing with the quality of images in new technologies.

Senior Image scientist at ARRI Munich Jan Frölich will discuss and demonstrate the High Dynamic Range (HDR) format, which is currently being introduced to television and cinema. Is the format, part of a new wave of technologies attempting to make the picture more real than ever, a powerful storytelling tool, or a consumer electronics-driven gimmick? Frölich's talk will give an overview on HDR from different perspectives, including the consumer and business side as well as the creative and technical perspective and discuss the opportunities and challenges in HDR content production. After the session, Frölich will be available for questions and demonstrations in our demo zone in the foyer.

German cinematographer and filmmaker Rolf Coulanges will discuss the quality of the digital image. Is there a digital look emerging as a new aesthetic value, leading to a changed aesthetic in cinematography? From an artistic point of view, Coulange will discuss questions of realism and expression in detailed error-free digital images versus a more abstract visual style. Drawing on some of the greatest paintings in the history of art and sequences from iconic feature films, Coulanges makes the case that we need image technology that visually supports the cinematographers in the abstraction of portrayal.
